2018 OSDU Junior Provincial Championships

OSDU is happy to announce the details of the 2018 OSDU Junior Provincial Championships. Please find below the invitation from the tournament organizers, tournament information and registration details:

"Dear Debaters, Coaches and Judges,

On behalf of the Ontario Student Debating Union, I am pleased to invite you to the
2018 OSDU Junior Provincial Championships, to be held at Lycée Claudel on
Saturday March 3, 2018.

The OSDU Junior Provincial Championships is the qualifier for the Junior National Debating
Championships to be held in Calgary, Alberta on the first weekend of May, 2018.

The prepared resolution for this tournament is: 

This House would force all communication tech companies ( eg. Google, Apple, Facebook, etc. ) to provide all data ( such as user conversations, GPS info, etc. ) in an unencrypted form when requested to do so by the courts.

Each participating school is expected to bring at least one judge.

Included in this invitation package are the tournament information, schedule and
registration instructions. If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact the
tournament organizer at margo.pinault@claudel.org.

For those travelling from Toronto, OSDU has made arrangements for a bus to leave
downtown Toronto at noon on Friday, March 2, and will return immediately after the
tournament on Saturday and arrive back in Toronto by 11:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 3.
The cost for the bus is $150 per TEAM of two debaters. There is no cost for one
accompanying adult /coach per 2 teams. The bus will of course fill on a first come first
serve basis, and will have a capacity of about 20-22 teams which will fill the bus with
coaches and teams. Exact location to be confirmed. In order to book a spot on the bus,
please do so by contacting Chris George at cgeorge@videotron.ca.

I encourage everyone who does wish to travel from Toronto to make transportation and
accommodation arrangements without delay to ensure availability as we expect demand to
be high.

Tournament Information

Saturday March 3, 2018

Lycée Claudel, 1635 Riverside Drive, Ottawa, Ontario,  K1G 0E5

Each school may send two teams of two debaters. ( 3 if space permits )                                        Students must be in grades 7, 8 or 9.

Coaches will be expected to judge at this tournament. Experienced senior                                    debaters (grade 12) are welcome as additional judges.

All five rounds will be in Canadian National Debate style. Two rounds will be on the prepared topic and three rounds will be on impromptu topics.

Speaking Times:
6 minutes constructive; 3 minutes for 1st Opp and 1st Prop summaries.

Please register your teams (with payment) by Wednesday, January 31, 2018. Registration will be on a first come-!first serve basis to fill our 50 team cap.

$100 per two-!person team. Cheques should be payable to “Ontario Student
Debating Union.
” Breakfast, lunch and snacks are provided.

Coaches are responsible for arranging accommodations for themselves and their

Debaters, and their chaperons, are expected to be at the tournament throughout the event.
