This tournament is open to all students regardless of their past experience.  It is also open to both Junior and Senior debaters who will compete in separate tournaments.

Schools are invited to send one or two advanced, and one or two novice, two-person teams.

The registration fee will be $160 Cdn per team, which includes lunch Saturday and Sunday. We will offer awards to both novice and advanced debaters. We will cap registrations at 100 teams. I am pleased to report that Chris George has agreed to tab the tournament for us.

In the advanced category, the tournament will feature a choice of topics for each round of debate: a “straight” resolution and a squirrelable resolution, which will permit the government team to use a resolution of their choice. One team will choose from the offered topics, the other team will choose side. Teams will have 15 minutes to prepare after topic and side are chosen. In the novice category, each round will have a straight resolution. Debating for both categories is Canadian parliamentary style

The Thornhill Secondary School Debate Society is thrilled to welcome you to the Thornhill Charity “Debate to Donate” Tournament. The tournament will take place at Thornhill Secondary School (167 Dudley Ave., L3T 2E5) on Friday, April 27th and Saturday, April 28th.

We believe that this tournament will prove a valuable experience for debaters of all levels looking to perfect their debating skills and form long-lasting connections with fellow debaters; and we hope that you will join us for this exciting event.

Furthermore, all proceeds from the event will be donated to Princess Margaret Hospital in favour of the hospital’s cancer research foundation.

HSBC National Public Speaking Competition

On behalf of the English Speaking Union of Canada, I am pleased to present to you the 2017-2018 “HSBC National Public Speaking Competition” to be held on Thursday 17 February in Toronto, Ontario at University of Toronto Schools. Each year, the ESU in London, England hosts the “International Public Speaking Competition”. University of Toronto Schools Third-Annual Zommers Cup Junior Debating & Public Speaking Tournament 2017

Dear Debate Coaches and Debaters,

It is our pleasure to invite you to our third annual Junior Debating and Public Speaking Tournament, The Zommers’ Cup, at UTS on Sunday, December 3, 2017. Our tournament aims to provide enrichment and skill development for our junior level debaters and public speakers in grades 8 and 9. It is ideal preparation for the upcoming Ontario Junior Provincials in March and will help redress the dearth of competitive opportunities for young debaters and public speakers. Our three rounds of speech events will combine emphasis on debate skills with emphasis on persuasion and rhetoric. Ontario Qualifier for National Senior Public Speaking Championships

It is our pleasure to invite you to the Ontario Qualifier for the National Senior Public Speaking Championships which are being held at The Country Day School on Tuesday, November 21st, 2017.

The Competition will be comprised of four different events, and students must compete in all four of the following:

  1. Parliamentary Debating (Impromptu)
  2. Interpretive Reading (Prepared)
  3. Impromptu Speaking
  4. Persuasive Speaking (Prepared)

The Top 8 students at this event will be selected to attend the National Senior Public Speaking Championships to be at St. John’s Ravenscourt School in Winnipeg, Manitoba in early 2018. Students will be expected to fund their own trip to the Winnipeg tournament. A maximum of two students may be selected from each school.

It is our pleasure to invite you to our British Parliamentary Debate Style Workshop at UTS on Wednesday, October 18, 2017. Our workshop is designed to develop the debate skills required in the increasingly large number of debate tournaments conducted in British Parliamentary Style: The McGill High School tournament, the Ontario Oxford Cup Qualifying tournament, the Canadian Oxford Cup Championship, the Hart House tournament, the Oxford and Cambridge Finals Day Championships and the International Championship for Young Debaters later in the year. We hope that participation in our workshop will foster confidence and skill development in the BP debate style, especially among novice debaters.

2017 Queen's University High School Debating Tournament

his year’s tournament will consist of six rounds of preliminary debate (two on Friday and four on Saturday) all in Canadian parliamentary style. The top 16 teams will break to Octo-finals on Sunday. Winners will then proceed to Quarters, Semis and a Grand Final. There will also be a U15 final for all competitors aged 15 or under on the 31st of August 2017.  The first four rounds of debate will all have open adjudication, meaning that debaters will be told the outcome of the round and given constructive feedback from their judge(s). All motions will be straight motions with squirreling, or changing the motion, strictly prohibited.
