5th Annual Peel Debate Tournament

Dear Debaters and Coaches,

OSDU has received the following information on the 5th Annual Peel Debate Tournament being hosted by Gordon Graydon Memorial Secondary School’s Debating Society to share with our Members:

“Dear debaters, coaches, and judges,

The Graydon Debate Society is pleased to invite you to the 5th Annual Peel Debate Tournament on Saturday, May 21st, 2016 at Gordon Graydon Memorial Secondary School. This tournament is open to all students regardless of their past experience.

Registration

Registration fee is $40 per team ($20 per debater), which includes lunch, trophies, and paper cost.

Teams

There is a cap of 6 teams per school.

Judges

Schools registering up to 4 (four) teams must bring 1 judge.
Schools registering up to 5 (five) teams must bring 2 judges.
Schools registering up to 6 (six) teams must bring 3 judges.

Judges may be teachers, administrators, debate coaches, or experienced/ graduated debaters. It is preferred that parents of debaters who do not have prior judging experience act solely as spectators, not as adjudicators, in order to avoid bias.

Resolution

“THBT central intelligence agencies have the right to encrypted information on cell phones that may threaten the security of a nation.”

Format

Rules

  1. No coarse language, rowdy behaviour or insults allowed throughout the course of the debate.
  2. Appropriate clothing must be worn at all times. Business casual is preferred.
  3. No use of laptops and/or other electronic devices once debate topics have been announced.

Note: Failure to comply by these rules will result in automatic disqualification.

Canadian Parliamentary Debate

Proposition

First Speaker:                   7 minutes
Build Proposition’s case by presenting a number of arguments (preferably 3).

Second Speaker:             7 minutes
Introduce Proposition’s final arguments, rebuild Proposition’s original arguments and rebut Opposition’s arguments.

First Speaker:                   3 minutes
Rebuild critical aspects of Proposition case and sum up entire debate by showing why the Proposition has won the debate.

Opposition

First Speaker:                  7 minutes
Build Opposition’s case by presenting a number of arguments (preferably 3).

Second Speaker:           7 minutes
Introduce Opposition’s final arguments, rebuild Opposition’s original arguments, and rebut Proposition’s entire case.

First Speaker:                 3 minutes
Rebuild critical aspects of Opposition case and sum up entire debate by showing why the Opposition has won the debate.
