UTS British Parliamentary Style Debate Workshop 2017

OSDU Members, Coaches and Debaters,

OSDU has received the following invitation for an upcoming NON-OSDU EVENT for your awareness,

"Dear Debate Coaches and Debaters,

It is our pleasure to invite you to our British Parliamentary Debate Style Workshop at UTS on Wednesday, October 18, 2017. Our workshop is designed to develop the debate skills required in the increasingly large number of debate tournaments conducted in British Parliamentary Style: The McGill High School tournament, the Ontario Oxford Cup Qualifying tournament, the Canadian Oxford Cup Championship, the Hart House tournament, the Oxford and Cambridge Finals Day Championships and the International Championship for Young Debaters later in the year. We hope that participation in our workshop will foster confidence and skill development in the BP debate style, especially among novice debaters.

DATE:
Wednesday, October 18, 2017

TIME:
4:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

LOCATION:
University of Toronto Schools, 371 Bloor Street West, Toronto

WORKSHOP LEADERS:
Our workshop leaders will be six outstanding UTS graduates and current debaters who have recently competed in the most significant tournaments on the British Parliamentary circuit for high school students:

Benjamin Levy
Armin Safavi-Naini

Kieran Kreidie-Akazaki
Adithya Chakravarthy
Alykhan Jetha
Gautam Manohar

They have competed at the Oxford and Cambridge Finals Day Championships, the Canadian Oxford Cup Championship, the International Championship for Young Debaters, and the McGill and Hart House BP tournaments. In addition, four of our workshop leaders are members of the 2017 and 2018 Canadian National Debate Teams. In the Q & A session following the workshop, participants will have the opportunity to raise questions about experiences on the international British Parliamentary circuit and/or about experiences related to membership on the Canadian National Team.

TEAMS:
Each school is invited to send as many two-person teams as it wishes; the debaters should have some debate experience and should be ready to take part in one round of impromptu BP debate. Registration will be accepted on a “first come, first served basis.”

COACHES:
Each school’s delegation must be accompanied by an adult who will not be asked to judge.

REGISTRATION FEE:
The registration fee is $40 per student ($80 per team), payable to “University of Toronto Schools” at the registration desk on October 18. This fee will cover a supper meal and some instructional materials.

PARKING:
There is very little parking available at the University of Toronto Schools. We recommend that most participating teams travel by taxi or by public transit.

REPLIES:
Please return the enclosed registration form by Tuesday, October 10, 2017, to Aija Zommers – aija.zommers@utschools.ca

Looking forward to welcoming you to UTS on October 18!

UTS Speech & Debate Co-Heads: Adithya Chakravarthy and Vikita Mehta
