VOICES OF CHANGE SPSA Debating Competition

The OSDU Board has received information about the following NON-OSDU EVENT debating opportunity that it wishes to bring to your attention:


The Student Peer Services Association (SPSA) will be hosting the “VOICE OF CHANGE” Debating Competition on Nov 25 and 26, 2017, in conjunction with Hart House Debating Club from the University of Toronto.

Program Description:
"VOICE OF CHANGE" Student Peer Services Association (SPSA) Debating Competition includes training workshops, networking opportunities, and competitions on the subject of individual freedom vs. collective good to inter-culture understanding in Ontario. It will be held on Nov 25, 2017 at 17 Toronto St, Toronto, ON M5C 2E3 and Nov 26, 2017 at Metro Hall at 55 John St, Toronto, ON M5V 3C6.

Program Objectives:
The debating topics will increase the awareness of diversified benefits of Ontario’s social, economic, and civic life in the Chinese community. It will better address the needs from Chinese community and consequently improve the social integration between the Chinese community and the mainstream society. Meanwhile, it will decrease systemic barriers for Chinese newcomer youths to understand their democratic rights and / or the electoral process.

Project Priorities:
We would like to hold a Debate Competition (Competition).  The locations will be at Newton International High School and Metro Hall on Nov 25 and 26, 2017. The language will be either Chinese or English. The topics will be individual freedom vs. collective good to inter-culture understanding in Ontario.

Expected Result:
All participants will be around 35 people and audiences will be around 100 people. SPSA will partner with Hart House Debating Club and so on. We expect to increase 100 new members, to encourage audiences to participate in community issues; engage volunteers to join the community activities; and coordinate partnership with different organizations on issues of interest to Chinese community.

SPSA Descriptions:
SPSA is an Ontario based organization founded by a group of young entrepreneurs and professionals sharing the same values. It is dedicated to provide services for newcomer youths of career development, entrepreneurship, and civic engagement to transfer their knowledge and skills from ethical environment to mainstream society.

SPSA Mission:
SPSA will help newcomer youth and young professionals to excel by providing opportunities for participation in a diverse array of programs and activities.

SPSA Targeted Market:
SPSA serves newcomer youths in Canada including high school and college students as well as young entrepreneurs and professionals.

We will waive the registration fee for all teams and judges.
