Dear OSDU Members, Coaches & Students,
OSDU is happy to pass on the following invitation to the Northern Secondary School 2017 Debate Tournament:
"Dear Debaters, Coaches, and Judges,
The Northern Secondary School Debating Union is pleased to invite you to our eighth annual debate tournament, to be held at Northern Secondary School, on Friday, March 31st and Saturday, April 1st, 2017. This tournament is designed to provide junior debaters with a chance to further develop their public speaking skills, meet new people, and enjoy a friendly debating competition.
Each team will compete in five guaranteed rounds of debate (two on Friday and three on Saturday), with additional semi-final and final rounds on Saturday. The fifth round of debate (third round on Saturday) will be the hidden quarter-finals.
All rounds will be debated in Canadian Parliamentary style. A prepared resolution will
be debated on Friday evening, with each team debating both Government and Opposition in
successive rounds. For the remaining rounds, all debaters will be given impromptu
resolutions. Teams will receive their topic and position (Government or Opposition) 15
minutes prior to the round in order to prepare their arguments for all impromptu rounds.
Semi-final and final rounds will be open rounds with straight resolutions.
This year’s prepared resolution is as follows:
“This house would allow religious rehabilitation in prisons.”
This resolution may be tough for some novice debaters, so it is recommended that senior debaters help prepare novices for this case and that debaters do their research.
Dinner will be served on Friday night as well as breakfast and lunch on Saturday. Beverages
will also be available throughout the entire tournament. Any dietary restrictions should be
noted on each person’s respective registration form (allergies, vegetarian, kosher, etc).
Registration is based on a first come first serve basis. There is currently a team cap of 5
teams per school, but this is lenient. If your school wishes to send more than 5 teams, please
send an email to email@example.com with the number of teams you would like to send
instead. We will confirm the number of teams your school can send on Monday, March
20th. (So long as you do not request an excessive number of teams, it is safe to assume that
all requested teams will be confirmed). If there are additional spots still available after the
deadline, they will also be made available on a first come first serve basis.
The registration fee is $90 per team ($45 per debater). This includes five guaranteed
rounds of debate, as well as three meals and beverages. Each debater team is required to fill in a registration form that will be linked down below.
Cheques must be made out to Northern Secondary School. They should arrive by Monday, March 20th. Alternatively, if mail is an issue, cheques may also be given to the tournament directors at registration on the first day of the tournament.
They may be sent through regular or courier mail to:
Northern Secondary School Debating Unio
c/o Mr. Dingwall

Toronto, Ontario M4P 2L5
Each school must bring at least one judge for every two teams. Judges can be teachers,
debate coaches, graduated debaters or experienced senior debaters. If your school is able to
send more judges, please register them as well. The more judges, the better! This is to
ensure panel judging in as many rounds as possible.
Each judge will need to fill in the Adult Registration Form that will be linked down below. In the form, please see the question where you will be asked give a ranking between 1 and 5, 1 being not recommended for a high ranking round and 5 being recommended for a high ranking round. This information will be kept confidential to Tournament Directors only.
Please note, if your school is a new debate club and you are not confident that you will be able to send experienced judges, please contact us and we’ll make alternate arrangements.
In addition, each school must bring one staff supervisor to be onsite during the debate tournament. They will be required to fill in the Adult registration form as well, linked down below.

In an effort to better respect the environment, we are asking that everyone please bring a refillable water bottle to the tournament. There are water fountains situated throughout the school for your convenience, and so we will not be providing bottled water to participants. Canned beverages and juices will be made available with meals.
Please submit your registration forms and send in your cheques as soon as possible to
ensure your school has a spot in the tournament. The tournament schedule is posted down below for your convenience. Feel free to contact Kristen Tse at firstname.lastname@example.org if you have any questions or concerns about anything. Thank you, and we look forward to seeing you at the tournament!
