Ontario British Parliamentary Qualifier

(Formerly known as the Oxford Cup)

Only teams from OSDU-registered schools in full compliance and good standing with OSDU’s registration criteria for the 2018-2019 year may compete in OSDU events unless otherwise specified. This exemption has not been granted for the 2018 Ontario British Parliamentary Qualifier.

As a result, independent teams and teams from schools not registered for the 2018-2019 year will not be registered for this tournament. Any currently registered will have their registration cancelled upon review of team / school status.

The Ontario Student Debating Union (OSDU) is pleased to invite you to the 2018 Ontario British Parliamentary Qualifier (formerly known as the Oxford Cup Qualifier) to be run October 27 - 28, 2018.

 This tournament will act as the qualifying tournament for the Canadian British Parliamentary Debate Championships in Toronto, taking place from November 30 - December 2, 2018. Please understand that should you qualify for this tournament, you will be expected to register in very short notice and book transportation to Toronto (if applicable) within this time period.


This tournament will be held on Saturday October 27 & Sunday October 28 at:

Please note, there will not be sufficient parking on site during this tournament. Please use either public transportation (Lawrence Subway Station, then bus #124), or locate alternate
parking arrangements. Please contact us for more information.


U-15 Division:

All students must be 15 years of age or less as of September 1st, 2019. This means that the

U-15 category is open only to students born after September 1st, 2003. In order to compete in this age category, both debaters must qualify.

Senior Division:

All high school students are eligible to compete in the Senior Division, provided they are still high-school students during the current academic year.

Please note that hybrid teams are not eligible to compete in this event, meaning that both debaters must be from the same school.


The registration deadline for this tournament will be October 18, 2018, at midnight. Please ensure that you have completed all items below by that time.

Each school is eligible to send up to four teams in total. No more than three teams can be in the same division (i.e. 3-1 or 2-2 is acceptable, but all four teams can not be in the same division). Should you have an interest in sending additional teams in either division, please let us know and we will allow extra teams if possible closer to the tournament date.

  • Attached waiver for each debater mailed to address above (with cheque is preferable)

Please also note that if you drop out of the tournament after October 18, 2018, you will still be held financially liable for all registration fees.

All debaters are expected to have an adult chaperone present and registered for the entirety of the event. Unchaperoned debaters will not be permitted. Chaperones do not pay the registration fee.

Debate Format:

This tournament will be conducted in British Parliamentary Format. It will be composed of four impromptu rounds of debate on Saturday, followed by semi-final, and final rounds on Sunday.

There will be no prepared resolution for this tournament. We will be using 5 minute speaking times for each speech in both age categories to remain consistent with the National level BP Championships Tournament. All debates will take place in English only.
