2018 Donahoe Cup
Dear OSDU Members, Teachers, Judges & Coaches,
OSDU is happy to pass on the following invitation to the Sacred Heart School of Halifax's 2018 Donahoe Cup -- a NON-OSDU EVENT -- on April 28 & 29, 2018:
"Donahoe Cup : April 28-29, 2018
I am pleased to invite you to Sacred Heart School of Halifax’s 13th high school debate tournament. The tournament will start Saturday morning at 9.00am, and conclude Sunday at 1.45pm.
You will have no difficulty catching a 4.00pm flight. Complete details are on the tournament website.
To reduce the travel cost for teams, the event is scheduled a week after the Senior nationals. If you can afford the time off school, you can fly home from the nationals (in St. John’s) by way of Halifax and have two tournaments essentially for the flight cost of one.
Schools are invited to send one or two advanced, and one or two novice, two-person teams.
The registration fee will be $160 Cdn per team, which includes lunch Saturday and Sunday. We will offer awards to both novice and advanced debaters. We will cap registrations at 100 teams. I am pleased to report that Chris George has agreed to tab the tournament for us.
In the advanced category, the tournament will feature a choice of topics for each round of debate: a “straight” resolution and a squirrelable resolution, which will permit the government team to use a resolution of their choice. One team will choose from the offered topics, the other team will choose side. Teams will have 15 minutes to prepare after topic and side are chosen. In the novice category, each round will have a straight resolution. Debating for both categories is Canadian parliamentary style, with the following maximum speaking times:
Debater Advanced Novice
Prime Minister 7 minutes 5 minutes
1st Opposition 7 minutes 5 minutes
Second Government 7 minutes 5 minutes
Leader of the Opposition 10 minutes 8 minutes
Prime Minister Rebuttal 3 minutes 3 minutes
Points of information may be raised between the first and last minute of a debater’s speech (but they are not permitted in the prime minister’s rebuttal or the last four minutes of the Leader of the Opposition’s speech). Debaters are not required to raise points of information.
Debaters in the advanced category will debate five rounds on Saturday, breaking to quarters.
Debaters in the novice category will debate four rounds on Saturday, breaking to quarters.
The Lord Nelson Hotel, located about a 3 minute walk away from the school, will offer rooms for $139 per night (single or double). Their number is 800-565-2020; please deal directly with them if you wish a room there, but mention you are with the Donahoe Cup event to get the reduced rate.
Please register by going to the tournament website:
I look forward to meeting you in April.
